Pottery

The pottery room is designed with two kilns which are caged from the main room. There are damp storage cupboards and a pug mill for reconstituting the clay. Children work in this medium at least once in an academic year. They learn the process of construction with thumb pots, coiling, slab pottery and press mould making. The children have the opportunity to glaze and decorate their own work.

Painting

There are many different forms of painting but at school we work with three main media which are poster paints, watercolours and acrylics. Adding glue to the posterpaint gives texture to the picture.

Batik

The basic principles of batik are taught showing that wax and liquid do not mix. Different methods of applying the wax to the material are used, but the main application is with a 'tjanter'. This art medium is used in conjunction with technology and is also developed in art club activities.

Computer Arts

The department has invested in computer arts equipment, such as a digital cameras and a large dedicated colour printer.    The children experience making computer animations using plasticine models.

Printing

This medium has a varied approach and there are several different techniques employed. The basic principle taught in printing is that we can repeat an identical image. Polystyrene is often used to make the printing block. Screen-printing is a technique used both on paper and material. Computer aided designs can be transferred into stencils and then used for the screen printing process.
