St Michael's School Mathematics Department
Curriculum
The Maths Curriculum has been based on the guidelines set out in the National Numeracy document, and this policy is now being implemented throughout the Years covered by Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. For Years 5 to 8 the syllabus is designed to include the requirements of Common Entrance.

Staffing
Maths is taught by Class Teachers from the Foundation Stage up to the end of Year 4. From Year 5 to Year 8 Maths is taught by Subject Teachers.
Limited additional individual help for children with difficulties is provided through the school. The Department is organised by a Head and a Co-ordinator who meet regularly to monitor work and discuss policy and planning issues.

Resources
Planning up to Year 4 is based on the Abacus Scheme. Children in Years 3 and 4 are setted, and in Years 5 to 8 subject taught. A variety of books and materials are used, but mainly Galore Park Junior Maths and Maths Prep Books, which are designed to compliment the Common Entrance Syllabus. A wide range of resources for practical work is also available.

Senior Schools
The majority of St Michael's children take Common Entrance at the age of 13 in order to gain entry to an English Public School. Most of these schools are situated in the South of England, and in recent years we have sent children to Canford, Sherborne, Cheltenham, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Radley, Winchester, Downe House, Badminton, Eton, Harrow and others.
For those children who wish to remain in Jersey we prepare them for entry to Victoria College, Jersey College for Girls, and sometimes Hautlieu (transfer to Hautlieu is at 14+).

Assessment
The GL Assessment (NFER) Progress in Maths Tests are used for assessment purposes and are used to track children's progress through the school. Assessment also includes 11+ and 13+ tests, and less formal assessment within Year groups. Optional SAT's are carried out at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2). Reception age children go through the Base Line Assessment.
