FROM THE HEADMASTER TO ALL PARENTS

FEBRUARY 2009 NEWSLETTER

Collection at Festival of Lessons and Carols:  Thank you for your generosity in raising £880.00, which has been split between the ‘Holidays for Heroes’ and the RNLI.

School examinations for Form 6 will begin on the morning of Monday 23rd February and finish on Thursday 26th February.  Form 6 have been provided with an examination timetable.   Testing for Forms 1 and 2, and Pre-Prep C will take place after half term and before the Parents’ Evenings.   Please do not make medical or other appointments for your children during this period.

St Michael’s Festival of Sport: This year’s Festival of Sport will take place over four days commencing Wednesday 4th March.  Approximately 500 children from Jersey, Guernsey and the UK will be involved competing in netball, hockey, football and rugby sevens.  All spectators are welcome.    For further information and timings please contact the school office.

Extra Tuition:  For our own records and in your child’s best interests, it would be helpful to know if a pupil is receiving extra tuition out of school.  Please could you notify the School Office if this is the case.  We are also happy for outside tutors to liaise with members of staff if they have any queries.

Health Matters:  May I remind parents that children should not return to school until 48 hours have elapsed after the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea.  Children with other highly contagious diseases e.g. conjunctivitis and impetigo, should not return to school before seeing their GP and having the condition treated. Please note that children who have had sickness and /or diarrhoea must not use the swimming pool for a period of two weeks following their illness.

Cakes for birthdays:  Please can you ensure that any cakes brought into school for the occasion of a celebration do not contain nuts as a few children in school have nut allergies.  It would also be very helpful if these could be of individual ‘cup cake’ style.

Lost PE Kit: It has come to my attention that children’s named PE kit is going missing.  Please could you ensure that any items of kit not belonging to your child are returned to school promptly.  I would also like to remind you that all items of uniform and PE kit should be clearly marked with your child’s name.  There is a quantity of unnamed kit outside Matron’s Room awaiting collection.

Second-hand School Uniform:  There will be another sale of second-hand school uniform on Wednesday 11th March between 3.15 and 4.15 pm in the Jubilee Entrance Hall.  Please bring any items for sale to the school office for sorting, sizing and pricing.

Spring Concert:  The Spring Concert will take place on Tuesday 24th March, at 7.00 pm.  All children in Forms 1 to 6 will be taking part.  Further information about timings and uniform  requirements are enclosed.  School will close at 4.00 pm on that day when children in Forms 1 to 6 will go home to prepare for the Spring Concert.

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust Adoption Scheme:  At the end of this term we hand over our cheque in support of the Orang-utan named “Jaya” which we sponsor and, therefore, Mrs Le Quesne, Head of Science, will be asking for a donation from each child.  More information is enclosed.

Hymn Books:  All children in Forms 1 to 6 are supplied with a St Michael’s Hymn Book which is laminated, bound and labelled with their name and this is retained as their personal copy until they leave the school.   Children who cause their Hymn Books to be damaged will be asked to pay towards the cost of another copy.

Ski Trip: February 2009:  We wish the ski group all the best and a very happy holiday as they head off to Switzerland.  Please telephone the telephone diary [852649] for ‘topical’ news during the week.

Ski Trip 2010: Application forms for the 2010 trip will be posted from school on the morning of Monday 2nd March 2009 and should reach you the following day.  Completed forms should arrive at the school office as soon as possible thereafter.  Telephone bookings will not be accepted.

Parents’ Evenings: Pre-Prep and Forms 1 and 2 evenings will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, 17th and 18th March.  Parents’ Evenings for Forms 4 and 5 will take place on Wednesday and Thursday 25th and 26th March.  Appointments will be sent out after half-term.  Please let the office know by Monday 23rd February at the latest if you cannot make a certain date.

Written Reports: Forms 3 and 6 will receive written reports only this term.  These will be included in the end of term mailing.

Half-term office hours: The telephone will be answered between 9 am and 12 noon during half-term week.  At other times the answer phone will operate.

Uniform Shop:  The uniform shop will be closed from Friday 13th February and will re-open on Wednesday 18th February 2009.  May I remind you that during holiday periods visits to the Uniform Shop are by appointment only.  Please telephone or text 07797 725 957 to make an appointment.
